A perennial problem with regular garden maintenance – nobody at home when I arrive to do my snipping at the prearranged time. What to do? Charge a missed call fee? Smile and rearrange without a word? Anyway, it started to rain and I dropped in on a friend nearby for coffee and chat, with my overloaded bag full of garden tools. Unfortunately said friend is a nervous wreck, receiving strange emails from his ex-girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend who informs him that the lady in question has been leading on a string of unfortunate and gullible men. My life in comparison seems simple and earthy and I’m grateful for it.

Spent the efternoon pruning ridiculously unruly roses with vicious black thorns puncturing my forearms. The client’s garden changed from a dark canopied urban hideaway into a bright, open social spot. It will be covered again by next year and the whole process will be repeated.
Begrudgingly posted a cheque to my incompetent and aggressive builder for the shoddy granite terrace his sub contractors laid for me. Decided I couldn’t take the stress of a small claims court case dragging on for a year – my health and well being are more important to me than a few hundred pounds. A shame he’s got away with a sub standard job which I am sure will only encourage him to take the same short cuts with someone else. I hope someone big and strong stands up to him soon.

Went in search of ’Queen of the Night’ tulips for a client. Found them on a stall in Columbia Road market. They will spring up very erect and non-frilly early next year, an iridecsent black, making a real impact after a long cold winter. Funny to be thinking ahead to winter on a lovely summery day in August, but that’s the nature of gardening, just like fashion. Tucked the bulbs away in a dark drawer and pedalled off to do Cat Nanny duties for an enormous white moggy who never leaves the house. He’s supposed to be on a diet, but I feel sorry for him all alone and I figure reverse psychology should work if I leave a big bowl of food down, he’ll not feel like scoffing the lot because he’ll be secure about having plenty. Hmm. He was certainly glad to see me and enjoyed being groomed with a wooden nail brush – there isn’t a cat brush anywhere to be found in the house.

I am embarrassed on behalf of my fellow tradespeople. What an unpleasant cretin he is. Grrr. I may name and shame him when this sorry episode is over.
Fortunately my cat likes licking the pools of rain water off the damaged stone. Why is it that cats always prefer lapping water from outdoor receptacles?
